Ready, Set, Go! Celebrating Our OSHC Sports Carnival

On Your Marks: The Running Races

We kicked off with the running races, starting with our youngest athletes and working up to the oldest. Our Kindy and Pre-Primary children took on the 50m dash first, followed by Years 1 and 2 over the same distance.

Then it was time for the big kids. Our Year 3 and 4 runners stepped up to 100m, and our Year 5 and 6 athletes closed out the races with some seriously speedy finishes. Watching the younger children cheer on the older ones, and the older ones high-fiving the little ones, was a highlight in itself.

Rotation Games: Something for Everyone

After refuelling at lunch, the children headed into our Rotation Games, spending 15 minutes at each station. The line-up included:

  • Egg and spoon races, where steady hands mattered more than speed
  • Sack races, guaranteed to produce giggles (and the odd tumble)
  • Dodgeball, full of quick reflexes and clever teamwork
  • Tug o' war, where everyone pulled together, literally
  • Soccer matches, with goals, saves and plenty of passing

The rotation format meant every child got to try a mix of activities. Some games rewarded speed, others balance, strategy or sheer team effort, so every child had a chance to shine.

And the Winners Are...

We wrapped up the day with our winners' presentation. A huge congratulations to:

  • Sports Carnival Champion: Ocean Keys, for an outstanding all-round effort across the day
  • Sportsmanship Award: Kinross, for showing kindness, fairness and encouragement on and off the field
  • OSHC Fitness Tournament Term 3 Winner: Peter Moyes, for their consistent commitment to fitness throughout the term

We're especially proud to celebrate sportsmanship alongside winning. How we compete matters just as much as where we finish.

Why Days Like This Matter

A sports carnival is a lot of fun, but it's also so much more than that. Here's why we believe these events are an important part of life at OSHC.

Movement builds healthy bodies and minds

Australia's physical activity guidelines recommend that children aged 5 to 17 get at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity every day. Regular movement strengthens muscles and bones, builds coordination and supports healthy growth.

The benefits go well beyond the physical. Active play helps children sleep better, manage stress and concentrate more easily in the classroom. A day spent running, jumping and laughing is great for wellbeing.

Children are far more likely to stay active for life when movement feels fun rather than like a chore. Events like our carnival show children that exercise can mean sack races with friends, a team tug o' war or a cheeky game of dodgeball. When we make movement joyful, we help build habits that last.

Healthy competition teaches life skills

Friendly competition gives children a safe place to practise some of life's big lessons:

  • Resilience: learning to try your best, accept the result and have another go
  • Teamwork: discovering that working together often achieves more than going it alone
  • Goal setting: experiencing the satisfaction of training, improving and achieving
  • Good sportsmanship: winning graciously, losing respectfully and celebrating others

Not every child will cross the line first, and that's okay. Learning to handle both winning and losing, with support from caring Educators, builds confidence and emotional strength.

Bringing all our services together helps children feel part of something bigger. They meet new friends, cheer for each other and share in a day they'll remember. Mixed-age events also give older children a chance to lead and encourage the younger ones, which is a wonderful confidence boost for everyone.

A big thank you to every child who ran, jumped, pulled and cheered their way through the day. Thanks also to our wonderful Educators and Support Office team, who organised the event and weren't afraid to get on the track themselves.

To our families, thank you for your ongoing support. We hope your children came home tired, happy and full of stories. Keep the movement going at home with a walk, a bike ride or a backyard game of tag. We can't wait for the next carnival!
