Nurturing Nature: Mullaloo Kindy Children Lead the Way in Dune Rejuvenation

Since March 2025, our young environmentalists have been visiting Mullaloo Beach to help care for and rejuvenate the fragile dune ecosystem learning that even the smallest hands can make a big difference.

Led by the inspiring Rani, a passionate volunteer and dune advocate, the children have explored every layer of dune care from weeding and planting to observing native wildlife and learning about seasonal changes through a Noongar lens. Each visit begins with curiosity and ends with pride, as the children see firsthand how their efforts help the dunes thrive.

Early in the project, Rani introduced the group to the plants and animals that call the dunes home. The children learned about Noongar plants, weed removal and how to identify animal tracks in the sand - from bobtails and birds to foxes and quendas. One unforgettable moment came when Teddy spotted what he thought was a “rat”, only for Rani to reveal it was actually a quenda! The children watched in awe as it hopped away into the bush, a magical reminder of why their work matters.

Over the months, the children have rolled up their sleeves for hands-on conservation, helping to weed invasive species such as Gazanias and Onion Weed, and later proudly planting over 60 native seedlings across multiple visits. With great care, they learned how to plant properly digging holes, patting down the soil and ensuring each plant had space to grow. They have watched their plants flourish, noticing wattle blooms and new growth each time they return.

Their learning has also connected beautifully to the seasons. During Reconciliation Week, Rani shared insights about the Noongar season of Djeran, explaining how local fauna respond to cooler weather and changing food sources. On another visit, in recognition of Keep Australia Beautiful Week, the children reflected on their role in protecting and sustaining natural environments - a powerful moment of environmental citizenship for our youngest learners.

This project is more than just dune restoration, it’s a celebration of community, sustainability and connection to Country. It represents our ongoing commitment at Tall Tree to hands-on, nature-based learning and fostering a lifelong respect for the world around us.

A heartfelt thank you to Rani and Mullaloo Community Inc whose dedication keeps our coastline healthy and beautiful. Together, we are planting the seeds of stewardship - one native plant at a time.
